CouchSurfing.com is a website designed to allow travelers and people with spare space in their house for someone to stay an avenue to find each other. By creating this site, its founders are hoping to create a global community. Users can create an account and can search for other users by location who will allow them to "crash" at their house while they are traveling. It is designed to create a low-budget travel option and maybe even connect people. It was launched in 2003 and has since gained international credibility.
The site does use some security measures (a legitimate concern for anyone about to spend a night with a stranger), and uses a system of references, verifications, and and vouching to ensure that it's members have a safe traveling experience.
Upon creating an account users can then either post their couch as available for crashing and solicit requests from travelers or ask different members if it would be okay for them to stay at their home. Though I have never used this site personally, I have friends that have used it with success traveling in both New York City, and Spain.
